Distress of Nations

O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not hear? Or cry to you “Violence!” and you will not save? Why do you make me see iniquity, and why do you idly look at wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted.

Habakkuk‬ ‭1:1-4‬

I think we can all relate to Habakkuk when we watch a video like this one above and many like it. We cry to the Lord to rescue, but it just seems like evil has carte blanche nowadays. More and more riots like these are taking place all around the world seemingly unchallenged. It is starting to become the norm. Sure, police and some citizens are trying to quench the flames of riot and rebellion when they take place, but I think the more disheartening thing is to see the lack of leadership from our leaders. They are blind and helpless! The impotence from our nation’s leaders (and politicians world-wide) is only catering to these thugs. Europe is bowing its politically correct knee to the enemy, and America is right behind them. It is either out of the leader’s complete naiveté or from a conflict of special interests that Islam and other anarchist groups are allowed to get away with these heinous crimes. Additionally responsible are the Muslim immigrants who are coming to the shores of the Western world in droves. Some are genuine refugees but could it be that many are coming for the purpose of starting unrest with mob rule? Let’s just say it, Islam is at war with the West. They even admit it themselves. It is no secret. So why should our nation’s leaders turn a blind eye to the fact?

But should these things surprise us? Absolutely not! The Lord even promised the distress of nations would precede His coming (Mat. 24). Peter and Paul foresaw the spiritual climate that would be ripe for God’s judgment. Daniel and John saw the rising of this beast in the latter times. Days like these are inevitable. However, in light of the ubiquitous spiritual darkness in our world, we should not lose heart because they only prove God is in control. He proclaimed it and recorded it centuries ago and that should give us comfort that He keeps His word.

Yet, Habakkuk’s cry doesn’t go unanswered. The Lord responds him by saying,

Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told. For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, who march through the breadth of the earth, to seize dwellings not their own. They are dreaded and fearsome; their justice and dignity go forth from themselves. Their horses are swifter than leopards, more fierce than the evening wolves; their horsemen press proudly on. Their horsemen come from afar; they fly like an eagle swift to devour. They all come for violence, all their faces forward. They gather captives like sand. At kings they scoff, and at rulers they laugh. They laugh at every fortress, for they pile up earth and take it. Then they sweep by like the wind and go on, guilty men, whose own might is their god!

Habakkuk‬ ‭1:5-11‬

What appears to be an out of control world is actually in under the control of our omnipotent and sovereign God. Who is like Him? He is allowing this wickedness perpetrated by mankind for His purposes and promises that He will judge according to His timetable.

The world is going to get darker, so the righteous will have to stand and face it. The tide is turning and we are in the age where good is called evil and evil is called good. His followers are entering the crucible for a time of testing. We may be called to be martyrs. After all, the Lord told us to pick up our cross and follow Him. Keep in prayer. Don’t allow your love to grow cold. Let’s continue to face the darkness with His light; we know that we are the victors in the end and will inherit the earth.
